Reflection Psych

Overall, this rotation was a great learning experience. This rotation definitely presented as a challenge at first. I found it particularly difficult to interview patients who were acutely psychotic and not in touch with reality since it was hard to follow their thought process. Although this was challenging at first, it became easier to establish a rapport with them after being stabilized in the Psychiatric ER.

My perspective on psychiatric patients changed as a result of this rotation. There is sometimes a negative stigma that occurs with patients who have mental health issues. However, you realize that all these patients need help as if it’s like any other physical illness. Most of these patients live relatively normal lives but have just had unlucky instances or hit a low point in their life that led them to needing extra help. Many of my patients were grateful for the treatment we provided and it was an eye opening experience for me that I will take with me in clinical practice.

Although I felt nervous being in the psychiatric ER at first, I became comfortable doing a proper psychiatric assessment and evaluation of many patients. I learned how important it is to actively listen to each patient, relate to their stories, and to show compassion and understanding. The work environment was especially fantastic, and I am excited to see where my career takes me!
